Canine Respiratory Illness

We have been receiving calls and emails with questions about the canine respiratory illness being reported in the national news. Unfortunately, there are still more  questions than answers. We do not know what is causing the illness and there is no one  treatment that helps all dogs.

What you can do:

Keep your dog up to date on all vaccines. Common respiratory-related vaccinations include canine influenza, Bordetella and parainfluenza.

We also recommend that right now your dog avoids groups of dogs from outside your household (doggy daycare, boarding kennels, dog parks, communal water bowls) when possible.

Symptoms of respiratory illness include coughing, excessive sneezing, nasal discharge, wheezing or difficulty breathing, lethargy, loss of appetite, or fever. If you see a dog with these symptoms, avoid contact. If your dog is showing symptoms, keep them  quarantined at home until evaluated by a veterinarian.

What we are doing:

Exam rooms are cleaned and surfaces are sanitized between all patients. Direct  contact between patients is avoided. We will be taking extra precautions with any  potential respiratory case.

If you call with a concern for a possible respiratory illness in your pet, we will have you call from your car when  you arrive so we can make sure that no other dogs are in the lobby and will get you straight into an exam room. If you are able, we will have you carry your dog inside.  Appointments will be at specific times of the day where we can minimize contact with  other patients.

We will be wearing protective clothing or changing our clothing after examining any patient with a potential respiratory illness. All medical equipment (stethoscopes,  thermometers, etc) will be fully sanitized between patients.

All exam room surfaces (tables, chairs, counters and floors) will be fully sanitized. No other canine patients will be seen in that exam room for a specific period of time.
